Qué es el Sardine Run para nosotros
El Sardine Run o "migración de las sardinas" es sin duda un sueño para muchos amantes de la naturaleza!
Buzos y no buzos.

We are Robert and Lacin. You guides.
As pioneers in cautiously entering the waters with these gentle giants, we take responsibility not only for your safety but also for the whales themselves. We do this with certified guides, always ensuring your safety and that of these magnificent creatures.
We enter the water with a maximum of four people and one of our dedicated guides. Our guidelines on how to behave around these gentle giants are carefully crafted, a testament to our commitment to responsible tourism.
Qué es el Sardine Run para nosotros
Along the eastern coast of Africa, seasonal marine migrations shape life in the ocean, and Tofo sits right in the heart of this natural corridor. Throughout the year, our waters are alive with activity: reef dives rich in biomass, encounters with whale sharks and manta rays, and during the winter months, the arrival of migrating humpback whales moving along the coastline.
The Nhapomene Experience is our standard diving itinerary in Tofo, created to give you enough time in the water to truly connect with the place. A full week allows for multiple dive days, space to adapt to weather and ocean conditions, and time to enjoy Tofo beyond the dives themselves.
If a week of diving doesn’t feel like enough, additional days can easily be added. More time not only increases your chances of exceptional encounters, but also allows for rest days in between, making the overall experience more relaxed, immersive, and rewarding.
Pomene lies further north along the same coastline, where the landscape begins to shift. A protected reserve where the ocean meets a quiet mangrove estuary, it remains remote and minimally developed, with far fewer visitors and a slower rhythm of life shaped by tides and isolation. The reefs here are less explored, conditions more variable, and encounters more dependent on the moment, creating a very different type of diving environment compared to Tofo, one that is defined less by predictability and more by raw, untouched character.
See below our Nhapomene Experience - Nhatofo is the Gitonga name for the area of Tofo Beach, the local language from Inhambane. Pomene is the second destination in the experience.
Day 1
Arrival to Mozambique
Arrival at Vilanculos Airport (Mozambique), where we will be waiting for you. Road transfer to Reserve of Pomene (4 hours).
Upon arrival, we will check in at the dive center and your accommodation.
Accommodation in Pomene with dinner included.

Day 2 to day 4
Scuba Diving in Pomene
Daily breakfast is served at the accommodation before we head out for the day. The mornings begin calmly, preparing gear and reviewing conditions for the dives ahead.
We schedule two morning dives daily for 3 days, with the option of a third dive in the afternoon or an additional activity depending on sea conditions and energy levels. Dive sites in Pomene are chosen based on the moment, as conditions here are more variable and part of what makes the experience unique.
The diving in Pomene is less structured than Tofo and far more exploratory. The reefs are less frequented, visibility and currents can shift quickly, and each entry feels more like stepping into an unknown system than a fixed route. Encounters are less predictable, but often more raw, with a stronger sense of discovery on every dive.
Between dives, there is time to return to shore, rest, and reset at the accommodation or along the quiet coastline. Lunch is not included, allowing for flexibility and a slower rhythm during the middle of the day.
In the afternoons, there is the option for a third dive or to simply stay ashore and experience Pomene beyond the water — walking through the reserve, observing the estuary, or resting in the stillness that defines this place.
Accommodation in Pomene is included, with dinner served each evening. Nights are quiet and unstructured, shaped by the natural surroundings and the distance from any busy settlement, allowing for full recovery before the next day at sea.
Day 5
Transfer to Tofo / Barra
Breakfast is served at the accommodation before departure, giving a calm start to the final morning in Pomene.
Depending on sea conditions and timing, there is the option for 2 morning dives before we begin the journey south towards Tofo. These dives are flexible and always adapted to weather, visibility, and group energy, making each decision part of the experience rather than a fixed schedule.
The transfer to Praia do Tofo takes approximately 4 hours by road, following one of the most scenic coastal routes in southern Mozambique.
The drive moves through remote landscapes, small villages, stretches of untouched coastline, and iconic African baobab trees standing alone across the plains.. silent markers of time and place that define this region.
Upon arrival in Tofo, we check in at the dive center and your accommodation, giving you time to settle in, unpack, and transition into the next part of the journey.
Accommodation in Praia do Tofo is included, with dinner served in the evening, allowing for a relaxed arrival after the day’s travel and dives.

Day 6 to day 10
Scuba Diving in Tofo/ Barra
Each morning begins with a fresh breakfast at the accommodation before we head over to the activity centre, in Praia da Barra, for the day’s briefing. Once we are all kitted up we will walk you through the plan for the day, sea conditions, and what to look out for once we’re out on the boat.
Right after we will get down to the beach where we will be launching from to head out to sea and get ready for the day in search of humpback whales.
We schedule two morning dives daily for 5 days, with the option of a third dive in the afternoon or another activity.
There is also the possibility to swim with megafauna whenever it is safe and possible: humpback whales (from July to September), whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, turtles...
After several hours at sea, we typically return to Tofo in the early afternoon. This is the time to unwind, take a hot shower, relax, or enjoy a quiet walk through the village before the evening sets in.
Snacks are provided on the boat to keep you fueled throughout the outing, and dinners are included at your accommodation, giving you a relaxed and easy end to each day.

Un día en el Sardine Run

On this programme, the daily departures are snorkelling excursions, so the Whale Swimming Experience is suitable for everyone. Entering the water to swim with the whales is not compulsory, so those less daring can also enjoy the show from the safety of the zodiac.
Entering with scuba diving equipment with the whales is almost impossible as they move quite fast, and keeping up with them is very difficult.
Even so, on our dive trips, we see them quite often while we are at depth.
For those willing to go in and swim with them, you should have a minimum of snorkelling experience, and have a minimum level of fitness as there is sometimes a lot of swimming involved in these excursions.
We usually get in the water with whales almost every day, but the idea is to have safe and unforgettable encounters first and foremost. Our aim is to have a couple of quality experiences on each of the trips, where quality means encounters of more than 10 minutes and close to the whales.
Each trip is composed of a maximum of 8 people, and only 4, together with the guide, will go into the water at a time. With this we want to invade the whales' space as little as possible and optimise the encounter with them.
