Humpback Whales in Mozambique

This is a non scuba diving activity

Every year, when winter tightens its chilly grip on Antarctica, a remarkable journey begins beneath the cold waves. In a breathtaking display, many humpback whales, Earth's gentle giants, follow nature's call. They travel from the icy southern realms to the warmer waters of southeast Africa's coast.

It's a journey of life, seeking the safety of tropical waters to give birth and care for their precious calves, that spans thousands of miles, driven by an instinct as ancient as time itself.

Over the last decade, we've noticed a fascinating change in the behavior of these majestic beings. While they keep a safe distance, encounters have become more frequent, and their curiosity occasionally leads them to approach us for inspection. Imagine them swimming calmly beside our boats, arching over the waves, and blowing air from their nostrils.

This is an experience we encourage every nature enthusiast, whether you're an experienced diver or snorkeler. It's a moment that leaves us all completely captivated.

Why do these whales migrate in the first place? What is their history in Mozambique? What about their biology and the songs they sing? What is that called when they jump with their tail out? Learn all the answers to your questions here and then book your trip to be a part of it 2026!

To make the most of this extraordinary encounter, we've designed a program recommending a minimum of 5 days at sea, though we can certainly tailor it to your desires and needs. Join us on this extraordinary journey, where nature reveals its most majestic secrets in the company of giants.

Join us on this transformative adventure with tales of tails; a symphony of whales, where the magic of the humpback whale migration awaits, leaving you with memories that last a lifetime.

Our recommended standard Itinerary

Below we present the standard itinerary for our Kakhulu Experience. Over the years, we have continuously refined and adjusted this itinerary based on our experience guiding safaris and ocean adventures throughout southern Africa. We firmly believe this balance between Kruger National Park, the Mozambique coastline, and the Indian Ocean offers the most complete way to experience this part of the world.

At the same time, we understand that every traveller is different. Depending on your flexibility, interests, diving experience, flight schedules, or personal preferences, we are always happy to adapt certain parts of the experience whenever possible.

Most importantly, this is not a trip operated from a distance. From the moment you arrive in Africa until the day you depart, we personally accompany you throughout the entire experience, guiding, travelling, and sharing each step of the safari, the travel days, and the time in the ocean alongside you.

Day 1

Arrival in Kruger National Park

Arrival at Skukuza Airport, located inside the legendary Kruger National Park in South Africa. From the moment you land, the safari already begins.

One of us will be there waiting to welcome you, and after a short introduction and settling into the safari vehicle, we head directly into the bush for our very first afternoon game drive. There is always something special about these first hours in Kruger: the smells of the African bush, the golden afternoon light, the anticipation of the first sightings, and the feeling of finally being immersed in one of the world’s most iconic wildlife destinations.

By late afternoon we arrive at camp and settle into our bungalows inside the national park itself. Staying within Kruger allows us to remain connected to the rhythm of the wilderness long after the game drives end, often hearing hyenas, lions, or distant alarm calls during the night.

Dinner can be enjoyed at the camp restaurant before resting ahead of the first full safari day.

Day 2 & 3

Safari in Kruger National Park

The days begin early in true safari rhythm, usually with coffee or tea shortly before the camp gates open at sunrise. These first moments of the morning are often among the most rewarding times to be out in the bush, when predators are still active and the park slowly comes alive with light, sounds, and movement.

Over the next two days, we gradually make our way through different regions of Kruger National Park, travelling from the southern sections towards more remote central and northern areas depending on wildlife activity, seasonal conditions, and the pace of the safari itself. Each area of the park offers completely different landscapes, vegetation, and animal behaviour, making every day feel unique.

Rather than rushing from sighting to sighting, we prefer to slowly explore the quieter roads and less travelled areas of the park, avoiding the crowds whenever possible and allowing the safari to unfold naturally. Depending on wildlife activity, we make our way towards camp while searching for elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelope, predators, and the many other species that inhabit this extraordinary ecosystem.

Throughout the safari we stop regularly at scenic viewpoints, picnic sites, and rest camps to stretch, enjoy  lunch, and absorb the atmosphere of the African bush. Optional activities such as guided bush walks or night safaris can also be organised depending on availability and interest.

As the sun begins to set, we continue towards the next camp where we spend the night, surrounded by the sounds and atmosphere that make Kruger such a special place to experience slowly and properly.

Day 4

Kruger National Park & border transition into Mozambique

We start the day again early, with coffee or tea shortly before the camp gates open. This is our last full day inside Kruger National Park,

As always, the day is guided by movement, tracks, and opportunity,  taking time in quieter areas of the park whenever possible, and enjoying the final safari moments in this extraordinary wilderness before we begin our transition south.

By late afternoon, we exit the park and make our way towards the Komatipoort / Ressano Garcia border. After completing border formalities, we cross into Mozambique and continue a short distance into a quiet rural area just beyond the main transit corridor.

Instead of continuing into a city environment, we settle for the night in a hand-picked countryside eco-style lodge in southern Mozambique. This stop has been chosen specifically to break the journey in a calm and natural setting, allowing time to rest after the intensity of Kruger and to begin the gentle transition towards the coast.

Day 5

Transfer to Chidenguele & Lake Inhampavala

After breakfast in the calm surroundings of our countryside lodge, we continue our journey north through southern Mozambique. Today is a true travel day, as we gradually move away from the border region and deeper into the interior landscapes of the country.

The drive takes us along changing scenery, small villages, open countryside, stretches of rural life, and the first glimpses of Mozambique’s slower coastal rhythm beginning to appear. This is not a rushed transfer, but part of the experience itself: a transition between two completely different worlds.

Along the way, we stop for a relaxed lunch and short breaks, allowing time to stretch, observe the surroundings, and absorb the atmosphere of travelling through Mozambique by road.

By the afternoon, we arrive in Chidenguele, a peaceful area known for its proximity to the beautiful Lake Inhampavala. Here, we check into our lodge set within a natural lagoon environment, surrounded by water, palm trees, and open landscapes.

The rest of the day is free to unwind and settle into the slower pace of life by the lake. Depending on arrival time, there is the possibility to enjoy a first walk, watch the sunset over the lagoon, or simply rest after the journey.

Day 6

Chidenguele & Lake Inhampavala

Wake up to the calm surroundings of Lake Inhampavala and enjoy breakfast in the peaceful lagoon setting. Today is a slow day, designed to rest, reset, and simply enjoy the natural environment.

The lagoon offers a quiet contrast to the intensity of Kruger, with time to relax by the water or explore at your own pace. Depending on conditions and preference, it is possible to go out on the lake by kayak, stand up paddle or canoe, or simply stay on shore and enjoy the stillness of the surroundings.

Lunch and dinner are enjoyed at the lodge, with the afternoon free to relax, read, swim, or enjoy the sunset over the lagoon.

Day 7

Transfer to Tofo & Barra Beach

After breakfast in Chidenguele, we continue our journey north towards the coast. Today we leave the lagoon behind and gradually approach the Indian Ocean.

By early afternoon, we arrive in the area of Praia da Barra and Praia do Tofo, where we check in at the accommodation and also meet the dive center to prepare for the days ahead.

The rest of the day is free to relax, walk along the beach, or explore the nearby village atmosphere. This is a beautiful moment of transition, from inland Mozambique to the ocean environment that will define the final part of the experience..

Dinner is included at the accommodation.

Accommodation  in Praia do Tofo.

Day 8 to 12

Scuba Diving in Tofo & Barra

Each day begins with a fresh breakfast at the accommodation, followed by a transfer to the dive center, in Praia da Barra (15 minute drive).

Once we are all kitted up we will walk you through the plan for the day and sea conditions. Right after we will get down to the beach where we will be launching from to head out by boat to explore the reefs of Praia da Barra and Praia do Tofo, one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.

We usually plan two dives per day in the morning, always adapting to ocean conditions, visibility, currents, and marine life movement. Every day is different, and the ocean dictates the rhythm of our time at sea.

Encounters may include manta rays, whale sharks, turtles, dolphins, reef sharks, and seasonal humpback whales.

During all ocean days, we provide packed snacks, fruit, and refreshments to enjoy between and after dives.

Afternoons are free for rest, beach time, optional dives or optional activities depending on conditions and interest.

Dinner is included each evening at the accommodation in  Praia do Tofo.

Day 13

Relaxation day

Today is intentionally left open for you to enjoy at your own pace, whether that means unwinding and soaking up the serenity of Tofo or taking advantage of the many incredible experiences the Praia do Tofo and Praia da Barra area has to offer. This free day invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy the rhythm of coastal life, or to venture out and explore even more of this vibrant region.

For those looking to stay active, a wide variety of optional activities can be arranged: explore the Inhambane estuary in search of flamingos, snorkel with seahorses and other fascinating macro life, or head out on the water for kayaking, surfing, stand-up paddle, kitesurfing, or even a sailing excursion on a traditional dhow or catamaran. Electric bicycles are also available for guided or self-guided rides through local villages, across dune landscapes with sweeping ocean views, or to visit the Coconut Factory, offering an authentic glimpse into local life and culture. Quad biking, cultural tours, village visits, and relaxing massages are also available for those seeking either adventure or relaxation.

Lunch is not included, but we will happily guide you to one of Tofo’s local restaurants to enjoy authentic Mozambican flavours. If your heart is still set on the ocean, an additional day at sea can be arranged depending on availability. Should a scheduled ocean day have been missed earlier in the journey, this is also the ideal opportunity to make it up.

As the day comes to an end, we return to the lodge for dinner, a relaxed and welcoming moment to share stories and highlights from the journey so far.

Last dinner is included at the accommodation in  Praia do Tofo.

Day 14

Departure

After breakfast at the accommodation, the morning is left free to enjoy a final moment by the ocean. Depending on your flight schedule, there may still be time for a walk on the beach, a coffee overlooking the Indian Ocean, or simply a quiet moment to absorb the final impressions of Mozambique.

At the agreed time, we transfer you to Inhambane Airport (approximately 20 minutes away). Alternatively, it is also possible to arrange a longer transfer to Vilanculos Airport (approximately 4 hours), depending on your onward international connections.

As you leave the coast behind, the journey comes to an end,  but the experiences from Kruger, Chidenguele, Tofo, and Barra remain as part of a continuous story
